The most successful artists of the 90s were named at the end of the 90s, based on Billboard's chart data through the whole decade. This is who came out on top. This is only in the US

1. Mariah Carey

With 14 number one singles from 1990 to 1999 and tens of millions albums sold, its no shocker Mariah was the most successful artist of the 90s. It was difficult for anyone to compete with her.

2. Janet Jackson

While it was hard to reach the success of Mariah Carey in the 90s, Janet Jackson was the closet to do it. Janet had 14 Top 10 hits throughout the decade and sold millions of records with just two proper albums released that decade.

3. Garth Brooks

The title of the most successful male artist of the 90s goes to country artist (and major LGBT advocate *see 1993 song "We Shall Be Free"*) Garth Brooks. Garth had five Diamond Certified albums in the 90s and 3 others that almost reached that mark. Interestingly enough he only had one song as a lead artist chart on the Billboard Hot 100 in the 90s and it only peaked at #62, pretty much the definition of albums artist. However, he had 18 #1 hits on Country radio, which is def what drove his album sales.

4. Boyz II Men

Boyz II Men was the most successful group of the 90s. They sold over 20 million albums and had 9 top 10 hits as a lead and 2 as a feature. Of those, 5 were #1 hits.

5. Celine Dion

Celine Dion rounds out the top 3 female artists of the 90s. Celine also sold tens of millions of albums and collected 10 top 10 hits in the 90s. Four of those hits went #1.

6. Madonna

While Madonna reigned supreme in the 80s as the top female artist, the 90s brought about new girls who were able to surpass Madonna. However, being the 6th biggest artist of an entire decade is nothing to look down at. Madonna had 15 Top 10 hits in the 90s, four of them being #1. She also sold over 10 million albums, which most likely is the reason she sits below Mariah, Janet and Celine. None of her albums were in the Top 100 of the decade.

8. Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston wasn't only a power in the 80s, but also in the 90s, much like Madonna and Janet. Whitney's power in the 90s came from her soundtrack albums and less from her solo albums. Her solo albums sold about 4 million copies in the 90s, while her soundtrack albums sold almost 15 million. Whitney had 12 top 10 singles. Six were from her non-soundtrack albums and 6 were from her soundtrack albums

nope, Erotica didn't even sell 2 million and Ray of Light sold a lil of 4million. This was a time when albums were selling 10 million plus

Singles helped her this decade. The Rihanna of the 90s

Slay at Mariah being 1st, love her so much :golfclap:off topic but: Even though this was for Latin Billboard , Selena, the Queen of Tejano Music, who just received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was certified 7x Diamond was the Top Latin Artist of the 90’s

Don't let @Ray of Light see this.  Oops.

Ot, I like the list of artists.  All deserving, imo.

I live outside the space time continuum.

She had the singles performances of Rihanna (and better) and the album sales of Taylor Swift (not quite Adele status, but come on Taylor SELLS). So having one artist with EXTREME successes in both arenas has me SHOOK. Wish i was older during the Mariah domination to experience it.

Sort of shocked Nirvana isn't on that list. They were so huge in the 90s. This was back when rock was bigger than hip hop and R&B.
